Application

Being that we live in the Dark Sky Designated Zone and bird migration path near North Fork Park in Liberty, we'd like to host star gazing and wildlife watching retreats where people come stay over, learn about the astronomy and the birds/wildlife.

UPDATE. 5/21/25

My well had initially tested too high for Total Coliform. I've since had it treated and am ready to get it retested. Just having a hard time getting a response from the county to reschedule a new test. Will send out another email/phone call today.

Jason Cone - 4/8/2025

Hello, just an update on the well situation. Now that the snow has melted, the well isn't buriedl. I called around to have someone come perform the shock treatment, but it was too expensive, so I have figured out how to do it myself. Just waiting for the chemical to arrive, shock the well, get it retested, hopefully pass, and finally get approval to build the septic tank!

UPDATE 1/6/2025

The county came and tested my well. It passed on everything except for one item, so they've asked that I do a chlorine shock and then retest. I'll be gone for the next few weeks, so will do that in February.

UPDATE

Carl Shupe has completed his drawing. The Division of Water / Health Dept. have asked that I get a flow test and a full panel test done on the well. I paid the fee for the full panel, so am waiting for them to send someone up to do it. I also found a contractor to come do the flow test, and am also waiting for him to get here. I'm hoping that once those two tests are done, we can get approval to install the new septic tank.

Hello,

Just an update, after many months of persistence, I was finally able to find someone to come look at my septic system. Carl Shupe determined that my tank is possibly cracked and I'll need a new one. Today I added the Wastewater Plan document requested to install a new septic tank. Mr. Shupe told me several weeks ago that he would submit a plan and a form that Weber County is requesting. He seems, however, to have disappeared. Of everyone on the approved list of contractors provided to me, he was the only one I could get to agree to assist me with this project (and that was after MUCH effort and convincing), so unless he starts answering my calls, I'm kind of at a loss as to how to proceed. On my end, I'm ready to move forward asap, but I do need him to submit the drawing of my system.

Hi Felix,

As you can see, I uploaded the maps you asked for. I've been talking with the Health Department. Summer is looking into whether my septic system was built under a permit or not. I'm waiting for her to get back to me. If it was, she says we should be good to go. If not, I might need to have someone redo it.

Jason Cone - 11/27/2023

Hi Felix,

In answer to your questions:

  1. I do not plan to have any signage.
  2. It will be a year-round operation. I'm not expecting to do a ton of business. I'm guessing it'll mostly be guests coming on the weekends. The guests will book their stay online. They'll be sent an automated message explaining all the details they need to get here, a door code to access the cabin, and any other instructions they need. Upon arrival, they'll find literature about the Dark Sky Zone, the nearby observatory in Huntsville, maps of constellations, instructions for using the telescope, apps they can download to assist in their stargazing, a calendar of any upcoming astronomical events, and other informational and instructional items. They'll be left on their own to observe the sky and enjoy being out in the country. It's basically completely self-guided. My job will be to market the Star Gazing Stay to try to get customers, as well as schedule housekeepers to clean and do changeovers when the guests leave, and basically make sure the house is well-maintained and stocked with everything in-between guest stays.
  3. The guest house is hooked up to the well and septic system.
  4. On the site plan, I'll label each structure, including my home.
  5. I'll call the health department to verify that the well and septic are approved and in good working order. Weber-Morgan Health Department. Call 801-399-7160.

Hi Everyone,

Per your suggestion, I have added photos of the cabin, the kitchen, the bathroom, one of the parking areas, the covered telescope platform, and the view from the telescope platform. Please let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks.

Jason Cone - 8/23/2023

Hi guys, I'm just wondering about how long I should expect to wait to find out if my permit is approved, or if there's anything else I need to do.

Thanks,

Jason
